Next Update

Update: I failed. I’ve done some thumbs over the holiday but that’s it. 😦

I am going to try hard to have an update next weekend (Dec. 20) but it’s the last week of the quarter so that also means grades must be done and I am trying to recolor page 6 because I hate the way it looks right now. We’ll see. Wish me luck.

Progress Update

Page 6 (7 to us), is both drawn and inked. However, the hubby is plugging away at some musical project and so will not be scanning it in for me just yet. Here’s a preview pic I took with my phone. Happy comic reading!

Pushy

So I am pushy and although he would not work on the comic yesterday, he did it today. Woohoo! So, here’s page 5 (or 6, depending on whether or not you realize page 2-3 are on here as a spread, when they are 2 separate print pages). And yes, this comic is scaled to print.

A tedious process

So, in case anyone was wondering. Here’s how we create Stay-Sys:

  • Brenton makes a list that isn’t all that different from a grocery list
  • Brenton reads through said list and explains what it means –> I make mini-thumbs* as he reads
  • Once the mini-thumbs for an issue are created, we tweak the story together and add/move/subtract pages as needed
  • I use the mini-thumbs to create real thumbnails – you know, ones that actually show what would be on the page
  • I check thumbnails with Brenton to get feedback –> he pretends to care but mostly doesn’t pay attention to what he sees
  • I turn thumbnails into actual sketched out pages, which I also show to Brenton and which he rarely says anything about
  • I then ink the pages…..at which point Brenton notices something that should have been changed in the pencils and I tell him too late and shut up
  • He scans them in, fits them to a comic template that will be appropriate for later printing, then applies borders, effects, etc.
  • I take this bordered version and color it sloppily because I am a total noob at digital coloring
  • Brenton takes the colored version and applies effects and letters it
    • ….and since all he had prior to this was a grocery list it takes him forever because he is basically writing the script as he letters

Whatever the process, when we’re done we have a comic page and I post it here for you. Sweet eh? And just so you know….page six is colored, so now he has to stop playing Fallout 4 to letter it. And since Fallout is basically his favorite franchise ever and all I see of him is the back of his head staring at his computer screen, it might be a while.

Phinch: trapped in a vault.

An old concept drawing of Phinch. I still like this one.

It has begun…

Hey Fans (or lack thereof),

I (the artist) decided to throw together this website until the real website is completed (see below about nitpicky letterer who is also the web designer). This one is not very pretty, but it’ll do the job. We hope you enjoy.

To begin, we’re going to try and set a deadline for a new page every two weeks, mostly because my collaborator is the slowest, perfectionist, letterer I have ever known (also the only letterer, but that doesn’t change how nitpicky he is). However, it has occured occasionally, that a page has been completed in a week. So wish us luck on being able to meet my prefered outcome of a weekly deadline.

To feed the flames of fandom: here’s my favorite character to draw, Freckles.
